Brugg Kabel AG

Brugg Cables was founded by Gottlieb Suhner as long ago as 1896. In the meantime, with sales of around CHF 270 million, Brugg Cables has developed into the largest company within the Brugg Group and is now Switzerland's leading cable producer. With our workforce of approximately 650 we are present throughout the world. We offer our customers an entire product range for the transmission of signals and power covering everything from fiber optic cables and low voltage cables to power supplies for construction sites and 500 kilovolt high voltage cables.

In our in-house research and development department we work constantly on new innovative products. In close cooperation with our customers, we develop customized system solutions and handle large-scale projects for entire power supply systems.

History


    On 6 May 1896, Gottlieb Suhner opened a cable factory in Brugg with 16 employees.
    1908 The company was converted into a joint stock corporation by the name of Kabelwerke Brugg AG.
    1920 The first in-house high voltage laboratory was built in Brugg.
    1934 Production of the first 150 kV oil-filled cables.
    1947 Kabelwerke Brugg purchased around 10,000 m2 of land from the local township. On this was built the new factory and later the various machine halls of today's Brugg Cables.
    1954 Manufacture of the first PVC-insulated low voltage cables.
    1955 Construction of the new wire rope factory in Birrfeld.
    1955 Production of the first 20 kV high voltage plastic cable.
    1956 Construction of the administration building in Brugg.
    1958 320 employees celebrated the 50th anniversary of Kabelwerke Brugg AG.
    1969 Construction of the largest underground cable warehouse in Europe with a capacity of over 2,800 rolls.
    1969 Development of sealing ends for SF cables.
    1979 Acquisition of Franz Rittmeier AG in Zug, process control engineering
    1980 Commissioning of the dry cross-linking plant for the production of high voltage cables up to 60 kV.
    1981 Introduction of cross-linked plastics for extra high voltage cables now up to 500 kV.
    1996 The Brugg Group now consists of six independent divisions. The largest is Brugg Cables (Brugg Kabel AG) which currently maintains branch offices throughout the world with a workforce of approximately 600.





Quality and Environment

Our actions are aimed at meeting the requirements of customers, the workforce and the environment in equal measure.

Environmental and quality management forms an integral part of all processes and is deemed to be an obligation for every employee and the management.

The quality and environmental management system covers all the operational and organizational activities of Brugg Cables.

Quality

Ongoing revision of the management system ensures compliance with the SN EN ISO 9001 and SN EN ISO 14001 standards and the requirements of EKAS (Swiss Federal Coordination Commission for Health and Safety).

Brugg Cables guarantees the quality of products and services in respect of condition, reliability and compliance with technical specifications during every production step by means of self-inspection, process monitoring and control using innovative technology and the consistent application of all elements of the quality assurance system. We also place great emphasis on using high-quality raw materials.

The aim of our quality management is to enable us to meet customer requirements straightaway with the level of quality demanded.

Tests

Every cable undergoes a routine test before leaving our plant. For medium and high voltage cables, this includes measuring freedom from partial discharge under increased voltage load. To some extent, our in-house test specifications are even stricter than required by the standard. The following measurements are taken, recorded and checked for conformity with the standard for every single length of cable:

    Insulation resistance (on 1 kV cables only) Geometry
    Conductor resistance
    Dielectric losses
    Voltage test and partial discharge measurement

Environment

Environmental Policy
Our company has been certified in accordance with the environmental guidelines of ISO 14001 since 1998. We are committed to using technologies and materials that protect the environment in the areas of marketing, development and production, and we support suppliers and contract partners in the promotion of environmentally compatible products and their disposal. We optimize workplaces and their surroundings from an environmental point of view and encourage the sensible and economical use of resources.

Occupational Health and Safety Protection

Occupational Health and Safety Policy
Occupational safety, health and quality of life are essential elements of our corporate policy. We promote occupational safety-oriented behavior among our employees through information, motivation and training. The aim is to ensure that we meet all relevant occupational health and safety requirements and that we comply with the legal regulations at all times.

Occupational Health and Safety Goals

By implementing suitable accident prevention measures, we aim at continually reducing all types of accidents / incidents. Another goal of our occupational safety activities is to avoid all accidents occurring as a result of dangerous situations on our site or due to technical faults in systems, machines and buildings. We comply with the requirements of the OHSAS 18001 Specification.

Rule 1
Environment, occupational safety, and quality management form an integral part of all processes and are seen as an obligation of each and every employee. We attach special importance to quality assurance measures in activities preceding the manufacturing phase, notably by ensuring that customer requirements are recorded with precision and that these are converted into precise specifications for the manufacture of our products. Equally, we make a point of using high-quality raw materials. We uphold the safety of our employees and our responsibility for their health and quality of life through supervision and control of suitable safety measures.

Rule 2
Each employee is responsible for the quality of his / her work, meaning that the principle of self-control must, wherever possible, be applied in all phases of product development and use. Both among employees and suppliers, awareness of environment and quality issues are to be promoted on an ongoing basis.

Environmental Aims
We preserve our environmental policy aims by inspection and control of the following main points:


    Consumption of fossil fuels (oil/gas)
    Consumption of electricity
    Fresh water consumption
    Waste (normal and special waste)
    Emissions (NOx, SO2, COs, HC, CH4, FCKW, HCL)
    Compliance with statutory requirements according to Swiss environmental legislation.
