Prysmian to build a new headquarters in Milan for 700 staff

Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cables and systems industry, presented this morning the project for the construction of its new Group Headquarters in the Bicocca district of Milan. Valerio Battista, Prysmian's CEO, described the project to Giuliano Pisapia, the city's Mayor, during a round-table meeting entitled "Competing in the world with heart and head in Milan", also attended by Giuseppe Sala, the CEO of EXPO 2015.

The building designed using the very latest in architectural innovations and paying great attention to energy efficiency and sustainability, will provide a 22,000 sqm space and be able to accommodate some 700 people. More than €30 million will be invested to build the complex, which will let the company save about 50% of the current building's yearly operating costs.

"Our Group - said Valerio Battista - is increasingly oriented towards a global market as the absolute leader of the cable industry, with Italy accounting for about 5% of our total turnover of nearly €8 billion in 2012. But like in the way we've kept in Italy the technologically excellent plants that produce optical fibre and submarine energy systems used worldwide, now, with the construction of the new headquarters, we've also wanted to reaffirm our historic links with Milan."

Designed by the architect Maurizio Varratta, the Prysmian Group's new headquarters will be built in the Bicocca district and even its shape, similar to a typical Lombard factory, will recall the industrial roots of this area of Milan. In fact, the complex will consist of four wings, used for offices and services, connected by two large "greenhouses", i.e. full-height glazed areas intended for internal mobility. The "greenhouses" will be real oases of greenery and, thanks to the presence of plenty of vegetation and water tanks, will make a significant contribution towards improving energy efficiency and the internal microclimate. Another feature of the building will be the extensive use of natural light thanks to extensive glazing. The complex will include the renovation of the Group's historic optical fibre spinning tower and will also house an auditorium and a staff training centre.

Prysmian has some 2,000 employees in Italy (out of 20,000 around the world) in 8 plants (91 globally). The Group has implemented or is currently engaged in major infrastructure development projects for energy and telecommunications, such as the submarine power connections between Sicily, Sardinia, and the Italian peninsula, and between Italy and Montenegro. In Lombardy and Milan, Prysmian has recently developed for Terna the first high voltage network using eco-friendly cables and has been awarded the contract to cable the Isozaky Tower, the tallest building in Italy, which will be built in the Fiera district of Milan. Prysmian optical cables also form the heart of the telecommunications system in Milan.

"We're looking towards EXPO 2015 with great interest: we believe it will be a great opportunity to relaunch Milan and Italy as a whole and will also provide fresh impetus for the construction of new infrastructure for energy and telecommunications, which are vital for the country's economy," concluded Battista.
