The Okonite Company

About Us

WIRE AND CABLE MANUFACTURERS SINCE 1878

Okonite Employees

The Okonite Company was founded in 1878 making it one of the original insulators of electrical wire and cable in the United States. Earliest customers included Samuel F.B. Morse for his telegraph network and Thomas A. Edison for the Pearl Street Generating Station, the nation's first, built in New York City in 1882.

In June, 1976, Okonite became the largest company in the United States to be owned by its employees through an Employees' Stock Ownership Trust. As such, Okonite employees have a unique vested interest in the quality and service we provide.
Ramsey HQ

Today, Okonite is headquartered in Ramsey NJ, approximately 30 miles northwest of New York City. At our six (6) manufacturing facilities noted below, we make cables that range from 300V to 345kV insulated products that include Instrumentation, Power and Control, Medium Voltage, and High Voltage cables. These cables are manufactured with a variety of insulating and jacketing materials including OkoguardĀ® EPR, laminated polypropylene paper (LPP), and other thermosetting and thermoplastic compounds.

Okonite serves a multitude of industry markets including Electric Utility (Distribution, Transmission, and Generation including fossil and nuclear), Oil & Gas (refineries and production platforms), Chemical, Military bases, Railroad, Transit and Pulp & Paper. In addition, we provide cables to various other industrial customers in areas of: Hospitals, Colleges & Universities, Water Treatment Plants and Data Centers. With today's focus on renewable energy, Okonite cables can be found at Wind Farms, Solar Farms, and Biofuel generating facilities.

Okonite is committed to the highest level of customer service. Domestic sales and services are provided by a nationwide network of twenty-three (23) District Sales Offices staffed by experienced cable professionals. These offices, along with five (5) service center locations and six (6) manufacturing locations, provide customers with an unparalleled level of capability in the manufacturing and service of insulated cable products.

Manufacturing Plants

Orangeburg SC Compound Plant

Okonite manufactures all thermoset insulation and jacketing compounds in-house. We believe strongly that this is the only way to maintain the highest quality finished cable products. The Compound Plant is where we produce compounds that are integral to our Okoguard EPR insulation system. This modern facility uses a "closed loop" system for maximum cleanliness in insulation compounds.

Orangeburg SC Manufacturing Plant

The Orangeburg Manufacturing Plant (511,000 Sq Ft) can produce a wide array of products, including Okonite's Okoguard EPR insulated cables. Even though this is our newest plant, ongoing continuous improvement programs have added capacity and efficiency.

Santa Maria CA

The Santa Maria Plant (500,000 Sq Ft) recently underwent a major expansion which enables Okonite to better service our customers. This plant also manufactures a wide array of products and also produces Okoguard EPR insulated cables.

Richmond KY

Our Richmond plant (630,000 Sq Ft) can produce a broad range of cable types including Okoguard EPR cables, Armored cables (such as CLX or Loxarmor), Railroad signal cable and control cable.

Ashton RI

This plant specializes in thermoplastic cables for instrumentation, control, communication, X- ray, and armored CLX or Loxarmor cables.

Paterson NJ

The Paterson plant manufactures paper insulated products. These include PILC (Paper Insulated Lead Covered) cables, LPG (Low Pressure Gas) cables, and Pipe Type UG Transmission Systems such as: HPGF (High Pressure Gas Filled), HPFF (High Pressure Fluid Filled), and SCLF (Self Contained Liquid Filled) systems from 69kV to 345kV. A recent expansion involving new equipment at this plant resulted in a 50%+ increase in capacity.

Cumberland RI (Opening 2015)

To meet the unprecedented growth in demand for Okonite CLX and non-armored Instrumentation, Power and Control Cables, a new 330,640 Sq Ft facility is currently under construction in Cumberland RI. This new plant, located just 3 miles from our existing facility in Ashton RI, will utilize our existing skilled workforce but will entail completely new, modern, high-speed, state-of-the art manufacturing equipment.
