JDR Cable Systems, Ltd

About JDR

JDR is a leading provider of technology connecting the global offshore energy industry. Our products and services enable vital control and power delivery to offshore oil, gas and renewable energy systems. The world's major energy companies and subsea service providers depend on high performance subsea control umbilicals and subsea power cables that operate in the world's harshest offshore environments. JDR invests in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, technology and people to deliver these world-class subsea products. We have a proven track record of delivering client expectations and are totally committed to lifecycle customer service. We achieve this through our specialist engineering teams, experienced project management, integrated safety systems and a global service network that ensures 24/7 aftermarket support.

Our Markets

Oil & Gas

We are a leader in Subsea Production Umbilicals, Subsea Power Cables and Intervention Workover Control Systems for the offshore oil and gas industry.  Our products and services are an essential element of the subsea infrastructure that enables energy to reach end-users in a cost-effective, safe and environmentally responsible way.

We have developed technologies that maximise the efficient delivery of power, control and communications through umbilicals and power cables.  Using our state-of-the-art engineering and manufacturing capabilities, we develop and deliver custom built systems for subsea installations at ever increasing water depths.

Renewables

JDR is a global pioneer in the development of Inter-Array Power Cables for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy projects.

We have embraced the growing international market for alternative and sustainable energy delivery.  Our renewable products connect power generation devices, such as wind turbines, within an offshore wind farm, and ensure power is transferred to an offshore or onshore substation.  The Group's UK east coast locations make it ideally located to provide, engineering, manufacturing and installation support services for the evolving renewable energy sector, which is particularly strong in Europe.

Global Services

Global aftermarket, installation and maintenance services are provided by the JDR's Global Services group.  JDR has a network of experienced and certified technicians and service support facilities, available 24/7 to manage customer projects, for JDR and non-JDR products, on or offshore.  The team has created periodic maintenance and inspection routines that include product lifecycle preventative maintenance and assurance programmes.

We support customers from project installation, to final site commissioning, with full product lifecycle support.  Our approach is designed to maximise your investment in a JDR product and lower the total cost of equipment ownership.

JDR has invested in a global operational network that enables us to support customers across the markets we serve.

Our Capabilities

Partnership

We work closely with customers to create innovative product and service responses to individual project and long-term industry developments.  We utilise our expertise in the design, manufacture, deployment and management of advanced products to deliver on customer projects that can operate in remote and demanding situations.

Technology

We operate at the forefront of subsea technology, working alongside customers to solve complex challenges.  This technology focus enables the JDR team to engineer products that operate reliably in dynamic, deep-water environments and develop technology ahead of future industry requirements.

Project management

Day-to-day working relationships and project delivery are managed by our team of highly-skilled project managers.  Project managers are the link between a client and the range of JDR's services from product design through to manufacturing, procurement, installation and service.

Design engineering

Our team of specialist engineers are experienced in all aspects of subsea cable and umbilical development.  They design custom-configured products to the requirements of individual customer projects, integrating standard proven and qualified sub-components to reduce the client's overall project risk.  This enables us to deliver cost-effective and reliable products that exceed international standards.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing facilities are strategically located to deliver high-quality products to global oil, gas and renewables markets.  We have invested over £30m to develop our capabilities: in Hartlepool for large-scale subsea production umbilicals and power cables, based alongside a deep-water port; Littleport, which specialises in IWOCS and medium sized umbilicals and cables; Thailand, alongside a deep-water port, for Asian markets; and Houston for servicing and topside products.

Offshore support

JDR, as part of our partnership approach, provides people, test equipment, training and supervision for customer installation and cable handling processes.  Unlike many of our competitors, we can support our customers right through to final site commissioning.

History

JDR was formed in the early 1990s when two of the most respected names in the industry, Jacques Cable Systems (UK) and De Regt Special Cable (Holland) merged.  As JDR the company has in excess of 75 years combined experience in the design and manufacture of subsea umbilicals and power cables that operate in harsh, dynamic, subsea environments.

In September 2007 JDR was acquired by Vision Capital, Goldman Sachs and Management from its then owners Bridgepoint Capital.  This change in ownership saw, in March 2009, the commencement of a £30m investment programme to develop a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Hartlepool.  JDR has continued to invest in its capabilities, importantly, business systems to accommodate the capacity of our growing design and manufacturing operations.

In April 2011 the Marine Cables division (seismic lead-in and air-gun umbilicals and defence cables) was sold to Fugro NV.  The financial gain realised through this transaction enabled the retirement of all senior debt incurred as a result of the growth investments made in the company since 2008.

JDR has enjoyed an unprecedented period of expansion and growth over the last decade, supplying numerous high profile projects for clients worldwide.  At JDR we now look forward with confidence into 2013 and beyond, as demand in our subsea energy markets is projected to reach an all-time high.

Set challenging objectives, which are regularly reviewed, to reduce the health risk to employees and contractors from our operations.
Implement, document and maintain Health and Safety Management System (SMS) consistent with OHSAS 18001 to allow us to coordinate evaluate and continuously improve our health and safety performance.
Actively promote a culture of challenging unsafe behaviour to prevent injury and ill health.

This policy will be communicated throughout the business, made available to all interested parties and displayed on the company website.

At JDR we are totally committed to ensuring all of our employees, visitors and contractors, wherever they may be in our global organisation, return from work uninjured.

Quality

All of JDR's products are built to exacting industry standards with an attitude of 'no tolerance for error.' Training programs are instituted across the organisation to ensure that every employee thinks in terms of zero defects in our delivery of products and technology to our customers.

As most of our work is highly innovative in a dynamic and changing environment we have periodic internal audits to ensure that all of our processes are in accordance with industry standards of workmanship. In addition, our engineering and support processes are at a level to ensure that the total delivery from JDR will be of the highest standard among our peers.

Quality comes only second to Safety in the JDR list of priorities. As would be expected, all JDR's manufacturing facilities are approved to the standard for Quality Management Systems; ISO9001: 2008 by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance.

At JDR, we believe that Quality is about much more than approval to the ISO standard. Over many years we have developed systems, procedures, equipment and expertise to truly assure the Quality of our products and services.

Our goal is the continual improvement of all areas of the business through review, appraisal and development. JDR test facilities give us the capability to carry out comprehensive qualification and acceptance testing on our products to the most rigorous International Standards, including ISO13628-5 (API 17E), SAE, LRS, DNV, ABS and NATO.

We realize that reliability is the key to success, especially within the sub-sea environment. JDR has implemented systems and procedures and has developed processes and equipment to continually improve the reliability of our products. Manufacturing equipment has been developed, in house, to ensure that processes are both reliable and reproducible. The use of computerized, real time, Statistical Process Control systems on JDR extrusion processes is one example of the latest techniques adopted in order to maximize reliability. Reliability is a key factor at every stage of the design and development of products and processes.

Tools such as Dynamic Analysis, Fatigue Analysis Design, FMEAs and Process FMEAs are used extensively. The use of comprehensive Quality, Inspection and Qualification Plans ensure that activities are developed and planned to maintain the highest possible standards.
