Pakistan Cables Ltd.



Pakistan Cables, the country's oldest and most reputable cable manufacturer, was established over 5 decades ago in 1953 as a joint venture with BICC.  In the subsequent six decades, Pakistan Cables has earned a reputation as a market leader and premier cable manufacturer in the country and a company that does not compromise on quality. Pakistan Cables has been listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange since 1955.  In 2010 General Cable Corporation, a Fortune 500 company and global leader in cable manufacturing invested in Pakistan Cables by taking up a 25% equity stake in the company.

Pakistan Cables is part of the Chinoy Group of Companies, which includes International Industries (IIL) and International Steels Limited (ISL), as well as other interests in diverse businesses. The revenue of the group in 2012 was Rs. 35.4 billion.  Pakistan Cables is ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certified and is the only cable manufacturer in Pakistan to have its cables type tested by the world renown KEMA Laboratory in Netherlands.

Founder



The son of Sir Sultan and Lady Sherbanoo, Mr. Amir. S. Chinoy was born in Bombay on 21st September 1921.  He migrated to Pakistan in 1948, shortly after his marriage to Almas, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Munawar Khan Afridi, on 9th February 1947.

He played a pioneering role in the industrialization of Pakistan by introducing and establishing concerns in heavy chemicals (Pak Chemical Limited), electrical cables (Pakistan Cables Limited) and galvanized steel pipes (International Industries Limited). His commercial interests also extended to trading (representing major European and American companies), contracting and distribution.

As an active educationist, he played a leading role in establishing the Institute of Business Administration Karachi and was a Trustee of the Aga Khan University Hospital Foundation , the Aga Khan Central Education Board, in addition to being the Founding President of the Management Association of Pakistan (MAP).   Appointed the Honorary Consul General of Greece in 1968, he dealt with this prestigious appointment with great honor and dignity. As a result of his efforts and commitment, he was awarded the 'ORDER OF THE PHOENIX OF GREECE' in 1989, one of the highest honors bestowed upon honorary persons.

As a prominent member of the Ismaili community, he was bestowed with the title of Vazir. He held numerous offices including, Trustee of Aga Khan University Hospital Foundation, Director and Trustee of the Aga Khan Central Education Board, Director and Trustee of  Aga Khan Health Services and Chairman of Aga Khan Conciliation and Arbitration Board.

Mr. Amir S. Chinoy was president of Sind Club  (1973 ~ 75), Rotary Club (1968 ~ 69) and Steward of the Karachi and Lahore Race Clubs. His social gaming interests made him an enthusiastic bridge player. A lover of horses, he successfully owned and bred several winning horses of Pakistan Classics including Derby, Oaks and Quaid-e-Azam Gold Cup races.

In his lifetime, he was the unifying force of the scattered Chinoy family. His book "The Chinoys, a biographical sketch of the family was a major accomplishment, signifying his position as the life and soul of the family, as well as making the family aware of its heritage.

He passed away peacefully on 23rd Ramazan 1418 A.H. (22nd January 1998) after a brief illness, leaving behind his beloved wife Almas, sons Mustapha and Kamal, daughters Farhana and Saadia and 13 grand children.

Quality Assurance & Technology

Pakistan Cables is committed to strive for product quality, excellent customer service, innovation and efficiencies. The Company reiterates its commitment to consistently deliver enhanced value to customers, through continual improvement of its product and processes. The quality management system of the Company continues to conform to ISO 9001:2000 across all departments of the Company as certified by BVQI, UK. . As Pakistan Cables is ISO 9002 certified company, all personnel are trained, motivated and instructed to fulfill all requirements laid down in the Quality Assurance Standard. Pakistan Cables has adequate resources essential to implement the quality system and to achieve its quality objectives as out lined in its Quality Policy.

The maintenance of the quality management system is achieved through Internal Quality Audits. The main purpose of the Quality Audit is to take necessary corrective action to eliminate deviations and further improve the system.

The Quality Control Programme for electrical cables at Pakistan Cables comprises of Receiving inspection and testing. In process inspection and testing and final Inspection and Testing. Quality Raw Materials are procured from pre-qualified reputable sources world wide. The Company has a highly advanced Quality Assurance Laboratory which is equipped with the latest state of the art equipment and is manned by professional and skilled personnel who are engaged to check process variables in every step of themanufacturing process, to ensure that all our final products are in compliance with the relevant international specifications.

As the objective of our Quality Process is to prevent any nonconformity, a considerable portion of inspection man hours are spent on the production floor where quality is build into the product. The responsibility of producing quality product lies with the Production Departmentl. The finished cable is then subjected to tests as per standards. Pakistan Cables also maintain a complaint handling procedure which involves the Technical Manager, Works Manager, Marketing Director and Chief Executive. Each complaint is promptly investigated and corrective and preventive action taken. Pakistan Cables is the only cable manufacturer in Pakistan with medium and low voltage cables that have been accepted as world class following the type testing and certification of its products by KEMA high voltage laboratory in Netherlands.

Business Process Improvement and Development

Improvement in business processes is paramount for any industry to stay competitive in today's market place. Pakistan Cables is continuously engaged in business process re-engineering activities to optimize its activities and benefit from the technological advances in operational, technical and engineering functions. Current initiatives are underway that will improve efficiencies and excess wastages in the near future.

The Company has invested in a 2 MW gas fired tri-generation plant and a state of the art PVC Compounding plant.  These plants will ensure that the company has uninterrupted power supply and availability of key raw materials at lower input costs.


Information Technology

Pakistan Cables is actively pursuing its commitment towards modernization of its information technology and communication infrastructure & facilities. A project for broadband data connectivity with most of the branches has been started using WiMAX and DSL facility of a local ISP. This will give a faster network link between head office and branches.  Furthermore, Pakistan Cables has upgraded its head office and factory network backbone and has migrated to a fiber optic based technology.

A comprehensive plan has also been prepared for establishing a disaster recovery site.  Under this plan, backup of all data, IT Systems and services is stored at this site on real time basis to ensure availability of these services in case of any possible disaster that disrupts the central systems at the primary location

Health, Safety & Environment

Pakistan Cables has a comprehensive HSE Management system and HSE policy. Every employee's obligation to comply with HSE requirements is ensured through a robust training programme and self audits, internal audits and periodic  management reviews.  Our entire staff is  committed to work together as a team to reinforce the HSE management system in the organization by adopting safe working practices and environmental friendly methodologies.  Some examples of Pakistan Cables' commitment to health, safety and environment are as follows:

    Pakistan Cables is in the business of producing the highest quality wires and cables in Pakistan as per International Standards.   Due to the high quality raw materials utilized in our products and our focus on quality, our cables result in saving of electricity.
    Alum-EX aluminium sections, as an alternative to wood windows and doors, help in reducing de-forestation.
    Pakistan Cables encourages customers to return our wooden cable drums through a drum recovery programme. Recycling wooden cable drums also reduces de-forestation.

    The Company has invested in its own combined cycle 2 MW Tri-Generation Power Plant, with waste heat recovery and vapor absorption chillers.  As a result Pakistan Cables is able to optimize the use of expensive resources of gas & electricity, thus ensuring energy conservation and reducing carbon emissions.
    Several measures have been taken to control pollution and to maintain a clean, green and healthy environment which includes prevention of process gas emission into the atmosphere and recycling of waste heat. Continuous efforts are made to improve greenery and maintain a clean environment in and around the factory through horticulture, better housekeeping, etc.
    All potentially hazardous materials are monitored by the Company to ensure that best practices are followed in environmental protection.  For example, any anodizing waste is neutralized prior to discharge.
